It was a memorable afternoon on July 3 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in The Hague. This historic church provided a beautiful setting for the joint celebration of #America250 and #Nederland445—two anniversaries that not only fall in the same month but are also closely intertwined. Our chairman explained this during his introductory remarks, referring to my book 'America, That’s Us', which was recently published. We resemble America, but the American republic also bears a much closer resemblance to its—two centuries older—Dutch sister republic than many realize.
Our keynote speaker this time was Prof. Dr. James Kennedy, who is related to several U.S. presidents and Founding Fathers, but who also has roots here in the Netherlands and has lived here for decades. In his 2026 Independence Day Address, the historian spoke affectionately yet with concern about the “community of values” to which his two homelands belong. Former foreign secretary Rosenthal will present the 2026 Dutch Independence Award to the people of Greenland

This Friday, the Dutch Independence Award will be presented to Ajaa Chemnitz, who will accept the award on behalf of the people of Greenland. The jury has enlisted former Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal to preside over the official ceremony. Drawing on his background in international relations, Rosenthal will undoubtedly offer some personal reflections on the selection of the Greenlanders.
Artist Riëlle Beekmans was commissioned to design the Dutch Independence Award in an original and symbolic way. Beekmans drew inspiration from Marijke Gémessy, who created the first “Dutch Lion with Plaque” last year.

Dutch Independence Award for the people of Greenland

The 2026 Dutch Independence Award has been awarded to 'the People of Greenland'. The Greenlandic people are receiving this international award for the “sovereign calm” with which they have responded to U.S. claims on their territory. On July 3 in The Hague, former MP Aaja Chemnitz will accept the award.
This marks the fifth time the Dutch Independence Award has been presented. The first award was presented to President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on July 26, 2022, a few months after Russia’s invasion of his country.
The jury praises the response of the Greenlandic people to territorial claims by the United States as a combination of principled steadfastness, democratic legitimacy, and geopolitical realism. Attempts to treat Greenland as the object of a geopolitical transaction were clearly and unanimously rejected. At the same time, Greenland’s tone remained moderate, without any escalation or hardening of rhetoric.
James Kennedy delivers the 2026 Independence Address
On the eve of the Fourth of July, the 250th anniversary of the world’s most famous Declaration of Independence, our foundation reflects on the founding of the United States of America, the world’s oldest modern democracy. But in addition to #America250, on Friday, July 3, we are also celebrating #Nederland445, because later that month it will be 445 years since the first modern declaration of independence was signed. A text, moreover, that had everything to do with the Declaration of Independence, despite the two centuries, the ocean, and the cultural divide between ‘1581’ and ‘1776’. This week, our chairman Geerten Waling published the book “America, That’s Us: Dutch Influences on the Founding Fathers of the United States” (Prometheus Publishers).

Throwback: Discussion on Vranck's Deduction and Erasmian values

Our foundation looks back with great pleasure on the meeting about Vranck's Deduction in the Former Synagogue in Gouda. In a packed hall, we started with an interactive session led by our board members (and history teachers) Daan Schuijt and Mathieu Peulen. Using quotes from Vranck and his contemporaries, they encouraged visitors to reflect on the debate at the time (around 1600) about the place of sovereignty. Does it lie with the people or the monarch? Vranck experts Paul Abels and Jan Dirk Snel made it clear that the Deduction (or Corte Vertoninghe) of 1587 was first and foremost a description of the power of the cities (councils) and nobles in the county of Holland, who met together in the States of Holland. You could see it as an aristocratic (or oligarchic) constitution, a legal text that described the balance of power as if there had been no uprising: for 800 years, Vranck argued, true sovereignty had not lain with the counts of Holland but with the States....

De moord op de Vader des Vaderlands. De apologie van Balthasar Gerards?Op vrijdag 13 december organiseert de Stichting Nederlandse Onafhankelijkheid (SNO) de jaarlijkse Apologielezing. Dit keer in Museum Prinsenhof te Delft. Het behoeft geen uitleg dat deze locatie een symbolische waarde heeft als decor van onze lezing.De Apologielezing zal uitgesproken worden door Jeroen Windmeijer, auteur van religieus-historische thrillers. Aansluitend zal SNO-bestuurslid Daan Schuijt op basis van de lezing een onderwijsproject presenteren.Over Jeroen WindmeijerHet werk van Jeroen WIndmeijer is inmiddels naar vijf talen vertaald en hij verkocht al meer dan 250.000 boeken. De Engelse vertalingen van zijn “Leidse trilogie” hebben stuk voor stuk internationaal op #1 gestaan op Amazon.com.In november verscheen van zijn hand De wraak van Balthasar, het tweede deel van zijn Delftse trilogie. Hierin stuit een stadsgids tijdens zijn rondwandeling door Delft op een vermoorde vrouw. Het onderzoek leidt de rechercheur naar het verleden, naar Balthasar Gerards, de moordenaar van Willem van Oranje.
Terugblik 26 juli en vooruitblik 13 december
Wij kijken terug op een bijzonder geslaagde viering van 26 juli, in het prachtige Raadhuis de Paauw in Wassenaar, van de verjaardag van het Plakkaat van Verlating. Dat deden wij met de Onafhankelijkheidsrede door prof. dr. Afshin Ellian (die ook werd afgedrukt in weekblad EW, hier gratis terug te lezen). Daarna overhandigde onze onafhankelijke juryvoorzitter Han ten Broeke de derde Dutch Independence Award aan mr. Hiba Husseini en mr. Yossi Beilin, die de prijs ontvingen namens hun initiatief The Holy Land Confederation. In een zwarte tijd voor Israëliërs en Palestijnen pogen zij, over de kloof heen en tegen de klippen op, toch te blijven nadenken over een vreedzame coëxistentie in een gedeelde confederatie van twee onafhankelijke staten. Zij vereerden ons met hun bezoek – en werden bovendien kundig geïntroduceerd door oud-diplomaat Robert Serry, die met hen samenwerkt om hun moedige plan verder te ontwikkelen. Tot ons genoegen bood hun bezoek aan Nederland ook aanleiding om eerder die dag de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken en de top van de afdeling Midden-Oosten van het ministerie te ontmoeten. Gelukkig kreeg onze bijeenkomst op 26 juli niet alleen waardering van de bezoekers, maar was er ook de nodige media-aandacht.

Mathieu Segers – boodschapper voor de wereld
Op 16 december 2023 overleed Mathieu Segers, historicus, politicoloog en voorzitter van onze jury voor de Dutch Independence Award.Mathieu was steeds enthousiast om mee te denken met onze queeste, om het vraagstuk van ‘statelijke onafhankelijkheid’ meer naar de voorgrond van internationale beleidsvorming te brengen. Al in de eerste kennismaking nam hij ons mee in zijn beeldende inzichten, vooral erop gericht de ander van dienst te zijn. Een mens die luistert, kom er maar eens om.Zijn bereidheid om ons bestuur als voorzitter van de jury te ondersteunen in de besluitvorming om in 2022 Volodymyr Zelensky en in 2023 de Vrouwen van Iran de Nederlandse Onafhankelijkheidsprijs toe te kennen, gaf ons zekerheid. De zekerheid die ontstaat waar Mathieu zijn wetenschappelijk opgebouwde kennis koppelde aan gevoel voor mensen, actualiteit en boodschap. Boodschap voor de wereld.
Zesde officiële viering van de Nederlandse Onafhankelijkheid
De viering van de Nederlandse Onafhankelijkheid op 26 juli jl. was wederom zeer geslaagd. In Raadhuis De Paauw in Wassenaar konden de bezoekers naar diverse uiteenlopende en zeer boeiende toespraken luisteren. voormalig president van Letland, mevrouw Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga sprak de jaarlijkse Onafhankelijkheidsrede uit, voorafgegaan door lezingen van Paul Brood en Bart De Wever. Het programma werd afgesloten met de uitreiking van de Nederlandse Onafhankelijkheidsprijs, dit keer aan ‘de vrouwen van Iran’.Hieronder vindt u alvast een korte impressie van de middag. Dutch Independence Award
To stimulate new thinking about independence, the Dutch Independence Speech was created in 2018. A selection of speakers have since - annually on July 26 - formulated a vision of independence in the 21st century. Since 2022, the year of the invasion of Ukraine, the Dutch Independence Foundation has established the Dutch Independence Prize (or: Dutch Independence Award). An annual award, aimed at the international community, for people who, in addition to thinking, also “do” independence.
Dutch Independence Address
The Dutch Independence Address is delivered annually by a prominent and well-known (international) authority figure, politician, scientist, opinion leader or journalist, who by virtue of function, position or insight can contribute to the interpretation of developments in thinking about independence. Education
The Dutch Independence Foundation strives to generate interest in and appreciation for the unique history of Dutch independence, with the Act of Adjuration as an important testimony thereof. Therefore, a school edition of the Act has been made especially for educational purposes. As a way of presenting our efforts to contribute to education about the history of Dutch independence, we organize the annual 'Apology Lecture', named after the so called Apology of William of Orange.
